How to Build a Strong Medical ResumeHow to Build a Strong Medical ResumeHow to Build a Strong Medical ResumeHealthcare and medical jobs offer a steady income and a chance to build a career thats focused on helping people.Like almost any field, you will face competition for job opportunities, so its crucial to have a medical resume that stands out from the rest. Otherwise, yur resume may quickly end up being rejected. The following tips and advice from the health care educators at Carrington College can help job applicants create a strong medical resume that makes a favorable impression and increases the chance of being called in for an interview. Benefits of an Effective Medical Resume.Job applicants in the medical and healthcare field only have about 5 minutes to make a positive impression on prospective employers through their resume. Generally, it only takes employers 30 seconds to look over a resume and determine whether or not it is worth contacting the applicant. Successful hea lthcare resumes provide employers with easy-to-read, relevant details about the applicants experience, skills and education. ansicht resumes should not have any errors or inaccurate information listed on them, which can lead to an immediate rejection. Important Medical Resume Traits.Job applicants can set up their medical resume in a number of ways, but the most successful approach is to provide information in chronological order. This allows employers to easily go through the details listed on the resume to quickly decide whether or not to call the applicant in for an interview. A chronological resume lists information, such as education and employment history, in order with the most recent information first. Including bullet points can also make a healthcare resume easier for employers to glance over to find relevant information. Creating a Relevant Medical Resume.Job applicants should avoid sending out the same resume for different punkts. The information included on the medical resume might be effective for one position or company, but not for others. Instead, healthcare resumes should provide specific information that most closely matches what each position requires. Each resume should have certain elements, such as a summary, an education section, an employment history section, relevant experience, and a list of licenses or certifications. Resumes should be one or two pages long and include detailed information prior experience in the medical industry. Experience in non-medical industries can be included if it is relevant to the position. Job applicants should also make sure to determine whether to send a resume or a curriculum vitae (CV), depending on the type of position being applied for. Certain jobs ask for a more detailed CV, while others ask for a resume. Medical Job Interviews.Job applicants who send in strong medical resumes should be prepared to make another favorable impression during the interview. Those who are called in for a job interview in the medical and health care field should wear a professional outfit and ensure that they are well-groomed. Scrubs and casual outfits are not considered appropriate for job interviews. Following up with a thank you note after the interview is pivotal to making a positive and lasting impression on prospective employers.Need help with your healthcare resume? How to Find a Talent Agent to Boost Your Media Career

How to Find a Talent Agent to Boost Your Media CareerHow to Find a Talent Agent to Boost Your Media CareerFinding a talent werber who will help your media career involves more than doing an Internet search or making a single phone call. Once you consider the pros and cons of hiring a talent agent, ask yourself some critical questions before choosing an agent. Deciding to find a talent agent can boost your media career. You just have to know what youre getting into first. Where Do You Want to Take Your Career? You may dream of being a million-dollar star news anchor on one of the broadcasting networks. Or your goal may be to become the best-known TV reporter in your hometown. Someone who wants to get to the network will likely have to criss-cross the country, building a career at stations in progressively larger DMAs. A talent agent can help you find and get jobs in unfamiliar cities where he has contacts. But if you want to stay close to home, investigate whether an agent is wort h the trouble. Chances are, youll know the people at the TV stations better than he will. A talent agent may not be very interested in helping someone who wants to stay put. That reduces his ability to make money. Will You Get Personal Attention? If you are handing over 5% to 10% of your salary, you deserve to get personal attention from your talent agent. But there are some agents who serve dozens of clients. That may mean they have little incentive to get to know you. Whats worse, some agents have a reputation of pitching several clients for the same job opening. Its true that some stations may have a preference for a certain physical appearance in their next hire, so an agent is presenting several people. But that agent is forcing you to compete with several of his clients when youre expecting him to tell a TV news director that you are the one for the job. Maybe the personal attention you seek is not in finding a job, but in negotiating your contract. In that case, it may no t matter how many clients an agent has, just as long as you can get him on the phone when its time to sign a deal. Remember, most agents charge less if all they do is work the deal, versus finding you the job. Are Your Skills Ready for a Talent Agent to Market? A 22-year-old college graduate may want a talent agent, so she can brag to all her classmates that shes made it in the media business. That mindset will likely lead to disappointment. A talent agent is constantly juggling clients across the country. Some will be a high-priced talent who can command the attention of top station and network executives, while others will be tomorrows up-and-coming stars. A rookie reporter will have a hard time fighting for an agents attention, even if she does get signed. If she lands a job with a $30,000 contract, she could give up $3,000 to her agent. Thats a lot of money to her, but not a lot to him. Its best to have a few years of experience so that the agent has a solid resume of perfor mance to use in finding that person a new job. Some agents will offer to critique your work. But if your station has a TV consultant, you can get the same advice for free. Before you jump at the chance to sign with a talent agent, check references, ask a lot of questions and try to negotiate the terms of payment. If it sounds like youre hiring somebody, you are. The time you spend considering your options will help you make the best choice including deciding if you need an agent at all.

Overview of Navy Enlistment Bonuses

Overview of Navy Enlistment BonusesOverview of Navy Enlistment BonusesLike the other services, the Navy offers enlistment extra incentives to encourage applicants to join. The value of incentives can vary, and theyre usually not open to every rating (the Navys word for a job). Typically wherever the Navy has a shortage of personnel or anticipates a need for a particular area will be the areas where bonuses are offered. There are career bonuses for remaining in a high-demand, underpopulated Navy rating as well. How to Qualify for a Navy Bonus Most of the Navys bonuses can be combined, so if youre fluent in a language the Navy needs and you sign up for a job that offers its own specific bonus, you may be able to collect two bonuses. To qualify for most of the Navys bonuses, recruits have to agree to longer active duty enlistment contracts, usually adding a year. Some programs which require five or six-year enlistment periods dont require enlistment extensions to qualify for bonuses . Here are some of the bonuses available to new recruits as enlistment incentives. Language Proficiency Bonus Sailors who demonstrate proficiency in a critical language can earn a bonus of up to $12,000. To qualify, the sailor must score at least 2.2 on the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT), prior to graduating basic training. Usually, the sailor must enlist in one of the following ratings builder (BU), construction electrician (CE), construction mechanic (CM), engineering aide (EA), equipment operator (EO), worker (SW), utilities man (UT), or hospital corpsman (HM). All of these require a five-year enlistment. There may be more added to this list so check with your recruiter to see what other ratings may qualify. Recruits must show the required proficiency in a language where the Navy designates a need. This list changes occasionally, but there has been demand for Middle Eastern languages such as Pashtu, Afghan, Arabic (numerous dialects), Punjabi, Hindi, and Farsi in re cent years. Again, its best to consult a Navy recruiter for the most updated list. Special Warfare/Special Operations Bonus Applicants who enlist in special operations and special warfare programs and achieve an advanced score on the applicable physical screening test (PST) during basic training will receive a $2,000 bonus upon graduation from basic training. The ratings that qualify for this bonus include explosive ordnance disposal technicians (EOD) Navy divers (ND) and special warfare operator (SO). If the sailor washes out of training, they will retain this bonus. However, if they make it through training their regular enlistment bonus will be reduced by the amount of the PST bonus. Enlistment Bonuses for Specific Ratings The Navy Enlistment Bonus Program provides a monetary enlistment bonus for Navy recruits who enlist in specific ratings, usually ones where there is a shortage of personnel, and whoship out to basictraining during specific time periods.?? Repayment o f Navy Bonuses Its important to be aware that if a recruit doesnt fulfill the terms of their enlistment for which they received a bonus, they will be required to pay the Navy back. The amount will be prorated and will depend on how much service time is left in the sailors contract.

How to Keep a Bad Reference from Ruining Your Career

How to Keep a Bad Reference from Ruining Your CareerHow to Keep a Bad Reference from Ruining Your CareerHow to Keep a Bad Reference from Ruining Your CareerNegative references can undermine your work overnight. How to stop them from ruining your career. TWEETWeve all been there, some jobs just dont work out. Either theyre not a good fit, or weve made some irreversible mistake. No worries, just chalk it up to bad luck, pick up the pieces and move forward. What if that doesnt work, and youre bad fortune hurts future offers? Some employers arent willing to leave the past in the past. They send references that hurt your chances and can cost you career advancements. For these instances, a mora proactive approach to a professional reference list is needed. Here are five methods to prevent past errors from becoming future issues.Clarify the situationWhile it may seem obvious to avoid including an employer you believe will give negative reports on your professional reference list, many neglec t this pertinent step and insist on referring hiring managers to companies that hold them in less than perfect esteem. You may think that a past employer wont give a negative reference, but unfortunately employers can, and do, give bad references. Think employers cant legally give a negative reference or do mora than confirm dates of employment? This is not true. The law doesnt prevent negative references, and, professional ethics notwithstanding, past supervisors can and will speak poorly if you let them. Before listing your past company, check with them to see what they will say in a recommendation. Often they will tell you upfront if they think it inappropriate to send referrals their way. Others will not comment. It doesnt hurt to ask. You also can ask a colleague to call and see what the reference is before including them on your professional reference list. If the review is negative or unconfirmed, dont list them as a reference.Have a conversationWhen a negative reference is un preventable, and your former babo has hurt your reputation, it is time to reach out and negotiate a truce. Call your former boss and ask if they would be willing to agree to a future reference call. While you might dread making this call, remember that the worst that can happen is that theyll say no.Be careful not to come off as judgmental. Treat this situation the same as a client with concerns or complaints. Go into the meeting with compassion and understanding. Listen to their complaints, offer solutions to the problem, and apologize. Be sure toListen to their side of the story.Use I statements avoid the use of You pronouns.Explain the impact this caused to your career.Dont argue or be judgmental. If the conversation doesnt look like it is going to accomplish anything positive, be assertive and explain you think this is unprofessional and counterproductive to both sides. Many employers will feel pity on your mistake, especially if you were young and just starting out, or they may fear legal recourse.Establish the true storySometimes the bad item on your professional reference list is a case of a misunderstanding or some form of inaccurate information. If the reference is factually inaccurate, skip your former boss and go straight to the Human Resources department. This may seem extreme, but giving a bad reference based on false information is unethical and unprofessional.Explain the supervisor has wrong information. Dont be judgmental, and never say they are lying. Human resource specialists are trained to handle this type of problem and will investigate your claims. Often, if you can prove the information is wrong, they will apologize and make it right with the new company.Explain the situationWhen you cant avoid a bad reference or negotiate it away, explain it to potential employers. Warn them that the reference will not be a good one, and take time to explain why. Dont make excuses, and never accuse the company of being in the wrong. Take responsibility f or your actions. This shows maturity. Everyone makes mistakes. Your future boss wants to know how you plan to prevent the same mistake from happening again. Some recruiters recommend smoothing the way by offering positives and proactive measures you took while at the job. Then explain the mistake. Others say sugar-coating the incident makes you look less than willing to take responsibility. One of the most common strategies employed against a negative professional reference list is more positive references. Consider seeking positive reviews from colleagues at the same company. They be able to detract from the original negative feedback.Ask them to stopFor negative references that dont cross legal boundaries, tell them to stop giving bad references. This is particularly effective if the information is not accurate and could hurt your reputation unwillingly. A strongly worded cease and desist letter addressed to the CEO, or another person high up in organization, is more effective tha n arguing.List the name, complaint and negative reference material in the letter. Be assertive but not accusatory. Tell them what they are doing, why it hurts and to stop sending negative references. Also include an ultimatum, like Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce complaint, if they do not discontinue their actions.Get others involvedLegal remedies should always be a last resort. This is a costly solution, to both sides. But if you cannot convince the person to stop defamation practices, legal action may be required. Consider three aspects before seeking a lawyerIs this the only solution? Is the negative reference causing irreversible damage to my career?Do I have the time and money to pursue legal remedies?Sometimes court appearances arent needed. A lawyer can contact the former employer on your behalf. Many companies prefer to prevent court actions and simply stop sending references of any kind.TakeawaysIts difficult to build a positive stellung in your career. Negativ e references on your professional reference list can undermine your work overnight. After 10 years of perfect work and productive contributions, one small mistake could shine brighter than those $50 million contracts you brought to the company. Be careful of every word you say and action performed. If you dont know if it could hurt, dont take the chance.Ready to write the next chapter of your career? Careers in Flux A Tale of Two IT Pros

Careers in Flux A Tale of Two IT ProsCareers in Flux A Tale of Two IT ProsSometimes when you have to make a career move that feels like a step sideways, backward or down, you create an opportunity that you wouldnt have had otherwise.Richard Bird, 43, welches on the IT fast track, with the position of CIO the brass ring. As a technical director for merger integration at JPMorgan Chase Co. and then technical director for multinational banks at Citco, Bird was managing programs in the hundreds of millions of dollars per year. Then life - and the recession - happened. Bird was laid off from Citco. He was forced to take what felt like a step backward - taking a job as a an IT program manager at retailer Limited Brands. The position at the Limited, and the 60 percent pay cut, didnt reconcile well with Birds career plans, but he said that his work experience allowed him to serve as an important resource to company executives. But just as Bird was reconciling himself to this new lot in his professional life, he was laid off again. (Last in, first out, he said.)Bird spent the next five months waiting for his next move on the bench, as he put it, before he got a call from one of his former employers, JPMorgan Chase. The firm wanted Bird back but could offer him only an associate project manager position - at a salary that would essentially mean aelendher 30 percent cut in pay.In many ways, Bird was lucky. Severance packages had left his family in decent shape financially, but his wife and four children insisted he go back to work. So he accepted the offer from JPMorgan Chase, with no title and none of the trappings of my original job. What Bird didnt realize at the time was that the circuitous and bumpy path he was taking would lead him to a different kind of success - and a different kind of life. This experience has been a gut-wrenching check on how I see myself and what kind of value I can generate, Bird said. With no BlackBerry, no 24/7 schedule and no travel around the world, Bird, of Delaware County, Ohio, has found the time to follow his dream of political office and is running for the Ohio House of Representatives. Bird said he is looking to apply his background and experience to serve his community and in turn bring this knowledge of citizens and their needs back to his employer.Would Bird trade it all for the money and title of his earlier career? He was given just that opportunity, when JPMorgan Chase offered him a more senior job at substantially more pay. Bird turned it down, opting to remain in his current position. Its not the season nor the time for that now, he said.Bird sees his experience these last few years as creating an opportunity that he wouldnt have had otherwise.Your work will make wayJoseph Wells, 41, has seen his career take similar turns over the years. Wells started in the IT industry back in the mid-90s, and has gone through two cycles of layoffs. Each time, Wells was forced to take lower-level positions to pay the bills. As a result my resume is about three pages long now. And thats going over only seven to 10 years of work.Wells said he has tried the summary approach to resume writing but that it didnt allow him to tell hiring managers what he could really do. Describing your experience explicitly, on the other hand, can make you look like a job-hopper if youve moved around, he said. One hiring manager Wells dealt with told him his resume looked like Swiss cheese. I was just trying to get my bills paid, he said, but the resume sent out all of the bells and whistles that this person is a job-hopper, not a keeper. With each job posting yielding 500 to 1,000 resumes, Wells said, it can be hard to explain individual circumstances. This is exacerbated by the fact that many IT jobs in Arizona, where Wells lives, are contract positions. With little hope of attaining the kind of IT position he wanted, and with no option to move to an area in which the IT job market is in better shape, Wells, so - like Bird he explored other avenues.Wells is a certified teacher and has been working toward his MBA. One of the bright spots in this economy, Wells said, is the fact that money is being spent in support of adult education. He now plans to finish his MBA so that he can teach business courses to adults.Bird and Wells had each reached a point in his career where up was not an option, and each took a different tack based on circumstances and need. Both men, however, recovered and landed in a spot that will serve as a launching pad for the next phase of their working lives.Said Bird Your work will make a way for you.

Hydraulic Fracturing Today And Tomorrow

Hydraulic Fracturing Today â€" And Tomorrow Hydraulic Fracturing Today â€" And Tomorrow Hydraulic Fracturing Today â€" And Tomorrow Editors note. With the price of oil as low as its been in a very long time, there is little question that these are challenging times for the oil and gas industry. Recently, ME Today talked with two leading industry professionals Frank Adamek, Chief Consulting Engineer at GE Oil Gas Drilling and Surface, and Blake Burnette, Senior Technical Advisor at Baker Hughes to hear their perspectives on how a young engineer interested in getting into hydraulic fracturing might best proceed. These interviews are edited and condensed for clarity. Q: What advice would you have for a young engineer today whos ambitious to make hydraulic fracturing their area of expertise? > Adamek: To find your way into hydraulic fracturing today, you need to know the specifications, the equipment and the processes. The geology of the shale is very important, as is the basic knowledge of how to unlock oil from the rock formations themselves. A candidate needs both a strong understanding of the equipment and to have taken the right courses, not only in geology but also in petroleum engineering. > Burnette: Conventional wisdom would say that its a tough time to break into the field now. But remember: the greatest minds in [our] industry joined during the crash in the early 1980s. They did what I would advise young engineers to do today: work lower level jobs to gain that absolutely invaluable experience. I had a friend now a highly respected senior-level industry professional who drove trucks in the 1980s just as his way to get in. He did everything, learned everything, and he has made a great career. So I say: go to the districts, go to North Dakota, accept a job as a fluid technician, work your way into the engineering positions. You will gain so much expertise. As the market recovers and it will you will be perceived as a leader. Q: What are the most important differences in this industry today compared to five or ten years ago? Adamek: The industry is moving faster now. The knowledge you get at school becomes obsolete quicker. You have to continue learning, either in-house or in on-the-job training. Think about it: five or six years ago hydraulic fracturing was in its infancy, and the U.S. was still an [oil] importer. Now weve become an exporter. Its a total turnaround in just these few years. We engineers have to grow with our industry. Now, as were getting into horizontal wells and optimization, were looking at costs much more deeply. Burnette: During the last boom, shale extraction was new technology. [Hydraulic fracturing] has been around since the 1940s, but only in the 2000s did some very smart people think of combining horizontal drilling with multi-stage fracturing. When everybody turned their attention to shale, we had the rush into new fields, North Dakota and so on, and that revolutionized everything. But as that was going on, a lot of profit was being left on the table. The industrys focus was on speed. Everybodys metrics were based on getting the wells drilled and completed and producing as quickly as possible. Much less attention was paid to finding economic efficiencies. But people now are going back and reworking those metrics, to figure out how to do the job more efficiently. Young engineers looking to enter our sector now should work on finding ways to apply new technology to reducing the costs their companies face. Even five years ago a young person advocating for a focus on efficiency might have been ignored, but now everybody is on a hunt for technologies to save money. Q: What dont young engineers understand about the sector that they should? What piece of conventional wisdom deserves another look? Adamek: You have to know how to be a team player. You have MEs, EEs, and structural engineers, all working together to solve big challenges. Which means you will need soft skills: how to listen, communicate, how to sell your ideas. How to speak in front of people. You have to learn to sell your ideas and thoughts. For this reason, I would even more strongly recommend joining a volunteer organization like ASME. A leadership position there helps you gain those skills and exercise them, so that you can bring them back into your job. Not much is more important than that. Burnette: I would say the value of hands-on experience should be emphasized. Theres a perception out there that the oil field is low tech, but in fact there are areas of the oil industry that are extremely high tech. And there are significant opportunities for technical innovation. Remember also that this industry now generates enormous amounts of data. Opportunities are growing for young engineers to gather and analyze that data. This industry is looking to become more efficient, and data analytics are how well get there. Be a part of it. Lastly, I would say you need to be prepared to move around, geographically. I have personally had the chance to work in 25 countries experience I wouldnt trade for the world. Its a very exciting opportunity for young people, but you should be prepared and know that part of this business is that you will need to move around and follow it where it goes. Q: What do you anticipate for this industry in 5, 10 or 20 years? Burnette: Much as I am a fan of renewables, I have to think that a lot of cars are going to run on gas for a very long time to come. We as a nation will continue to depend on oil for a long time to come. The United States will keep moving towards energy independence, yes. And other countries will produce the shale reserves that they have. But the main thing to bear in mind is that we will keep producing shale oil, and you can bet on it this industry is going to bounce back and thrive again.

10 Signs that You Should Find a New Job in 2014

10 Signs that You Should Find a New Job in 2014 10 Signs that You Should Find a New Job in 2014 Do you look forward to going to work? Do you enjoy the environment? Respect your co-workers? Does your work fulfil you? If the answer to any of these questions is no, its probably time to make a change. But if youre like most of us, you stay where you are longer than you should. I know. Ive done it myself several times. There are all kinds of reasons for this. We fear change. Were tired and stressed. We dont have much free time. But whatever the reasons we give ourselves, the end the result is the same. We remain in a situation that makes us unhappy. If this sounds like you, here are 10 clear signals that you should find a new job as soon as possible. You often wake up dreading the day ahead If youre nodding at this, it’s time to look for another job. We each only get a short time on this earth and there’s absolutely no reason to spend it in a job that makes you unhappy. It’s easy to talk yourself out of making a move for a million different reasons, but the bottom line is this: no one should dread going to work. If you do, it’s time to find a new job You find yourself bitching and moaning with co-workers If you’re unhappy, it’s easy to fall into the trap of complaining to co-workers. Misery loves company and sometimes a good grumble can make you feel better. But if you regularly find yourself complaining, its time to find new work. Your company is paying you a good salary and it’s not fair to take that money if you’re bitching about them (no matter how much they deserve it!) You resent your boss for being lazy/incompetent/greedy/insert alternative adjective here You may be right. Your boss may be lazy, incompetent or greedy. But resenting it will get you nothing but raised blood pressure and increased stress levels. If you find yourself starting to feel this way, polish up your resume and start looking for a new job! You regularly post negative comments about your job on social media sites Not only is this a huge red flag telling you that you’re unhappy, but it’s also a surefire way to establish a bad reputation â€" and maybe even to get yourself fired. If you’re this unhappy, it’s time to get out. You find yourself browsing job boards during company time Maybe you’re not seriously looking, but you can’t help checking to see what’s available. The thing is, no one does this if they love their job. If you’re happy at work, looking for another job is the last thing on your mind. If you keep pulling up Monster.com, it’s time to find a new job. You are often bored It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when you’re comfortable. If your work is no longer challenging, it’s time to go â€" otherwise you may still be at the same desk doing the same stuff in 5 years time, Yikes! Find a new job! You come home stressed more evenings than not Stress is a leading cause of illness and can have serious long-term consequences. If you find yourself coming home from work feeling stressed out, you are quite simply making yourself sick. It’s time to move on. You don’t fit with the culture I once worked in a place that sapped my energy. The company sold a product I love and had a good business philosophy. It should have been a perfect fit. But I just didn’t fit in with the company culture. Other people thrived there, but I never found a way to fit in. Finally making the decision to leave was one of the best things I ever did for myself. You don’t believe in what you’re doing This could relate to your own work, or to the company’s products or services. In order to feel fulfilled, you have to feel that what you’re doing is worthwhile. If you don’t believe it is, you should find a new job where you know you’re making a positive impact. You know you have more to offer, but no one is interested If you’re constantly suggesting ideas or looking for ways to make extra contributions, it’s extremely disheartening to have your suggestions ignored or turned down. Don’t waste any more time â€" go find a place where your ideas are valued. You’ll be much happier. Make 2014 the year you vow to be happy at work When youre in an unhappy situation, its easy to feel trapped, but the new year is the perfect time to make a fresh start. So why not spend the next few weeks preparing to make a move. Start browsing those job listings seriously. Polish up your resume. Improve your LinkedIn profile. Start networking. By this time next year, you could be well settled in to a job that actually leaves you feeling fulfilled and happy. Now thats a new years resolution worth making. Bigger is better in UK consulting

Bigger is better in UK consulting Bigger is better in UK consulting Recently, Britain's Management Consulting Association (MCA), which counts about 70 percent of the UK consulting industry among its membership, released its short list for the organization's 2011 Awards spread. Potential winners compete in a slew of categories, from firm-wide strategy project accolades to individual 'Consultant of the Year' designations in various practice areas. It could be said that the shortlist features a who's who of the UK consulting industryMCA would certainly say so. If that is indeed the case, the list reveals some striking differences among key players in the British and American industries. For one, there's a glaring lack of anything McKinsey (I can't say I'm not relieved...); other American darlings of sterling international repute like Bain and Boston Consulting Group are equally absent.Instead, MCA's shortlist is dominated by international heavyweights, firms with high head-counts and even higher global brand recognition. Of these, the Big Four firms make the most appearances. MCA's Strategy Consultant of the Year nominees? Consultants from PwC, Deloitte, Accenture and KPMG leave room for but one other nominee; that individual comes from Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), an international consultancy of nearly 100,000 employees. Not convinced? Check out the four-person shortlist for Change Management Consultant of the Year: Deloitte and KPMG crack the quadrant again, and the other two spots go to consultants from 100,000+ giants IBM and Accenture. To be fair, the stray small UK consultancy does appear occasionally on these lists. A few other Vault mainstays like Hay Group and PA Consulting are also nominated once. But the trend is clear: in Britain, the biggest consulting shops dominate the market. Big Four firms are particularly dominant; other major world players like Accenture, CSC and IBM also share in the prestige. It isn't like McKinsey, BCG and the other usual suspects are inactive in Britain (MCA's entry guidelines don't require firms to be of British origin), so what's with the absence? We'll continue to examine this intriguing trend here on Consult THIS.For more information: The MCA Awards Shortlist

The 5 Best Cities for Jobs in 2017

The 5 Best Cities for Jobs in 2017 The 5 Best Cities for Jobs in 2017 “Where should I move for work?” It’s a question that comes to mind for almost everyone at some point, from recent graduates looking for their first real job to seasoned professionals who’ve grown restless at their current position. It’s tempting to make this decision based on a gut feeling alone - maybe you’ve always dreamed of being surrounded by the hustle and bustle of New York City, or the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles - but a decision as big as moving shouldn’t be made on a whim. Besides personality fit, it’s critical to think about things like cost of living, job availability and quality of life. Don’t feel like doing exhaustive research into all of the major metros in the U.S. to find this information? We don’t blame you. Glassdoor’s made it easier for you by releasing our Best Cities for Jobs in 2017  report , which ranks the top U.S. cities according to their Glassdoor City Score, a figure determined by weighing three factors equally: how easy it is to get a job, how affordable it is to live there and how satisfied employees are working there.* Here are the five cities that came out on top: Glassdoor City Score (out of 5) : 4.4 The Steel City hits the sweet spot between a reasonable cost of living (it was the third most affordable among the top 50 metros we studied based on median salary compared to median home value) , tons of open jobs and generally satisfied employees. Traditionally known as an industrial hub, Pittsburgh has seen a revitalization in recent years, with booming healthcare, education and tourism sectors. Get your fill of culture at one of the city’s many art museums, or your sports fix from a Steelers or Penguins game. Known as the Crossroads of America, Indianapolis is located within a single-day drive of 70 percent of the nation’s business centers and port cities . While the majority of the city’s economy is driven by finance, insurance and manufacturing, it’s also seen a tech boom over the years, with companies like Salesforce setting up shop there. Check out the legendary Indy 500 race or the Indianapolis Children’s Museum! The largest city in the Show Me State, Kansas City is a hub for great barbecue, live music and, of course, plenty of open jobs. The federal government is one of the largest employers in KC, with a significant presence from the IRS, Social Security Administration and US Postal Office. Hot tip: Kansas City is also vying hard to become home to Amazon’s newly-announced second headquarters . Smack dab in the middle of the Research triangle - the area between North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - Raleigh-Durham is home to many jobs in academia, tech and healthcare. Given the close proximity to three major universities, Raleigh-Durham is a college sports fan’s dream, with the Duke University Blue Devils and UNC Tar Heels historically among the best college basketball programs in the country. But while college sports here may be intensely competitive, the job hunt isn’t - Raleigh-Durham is ranked the second-best city for hiring opportunity, based on the ratio of current job openings to population. The second Missouri city to crack our top-five list, St. Louis is home to a number of major corporations like Nestlé Purina , Panera and Anheuser-Busch . St. Louis’s picturesque Gateway Arch draws in a great deal of tourism throughout the year, as does its unique food scene with local dishes such as St. Louis-style pizza, ribs and toasted ravioli. Surprised that you don’t find tech and finance hubs like San Francisco or New York on here? That’s no coincidence. “Big, metropolitan cities may be more famous than others, including being home to some amazing companies to work for, but this recognition is also what contributes to them being among the most expensive places to live,” says Glassdoor Chief Economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain. “People may be overlooking midsize cities like Pittsburgh or St. Louis if they are looking to relocate or find new opportunities. What this jobs report shows is that many midsize cities stand out for offering a great mix of a thriving job market with plenty of opportunity, paired with home affordability and being regions where employees are more satisfied in their jobs too.” Ready to make your next big move? Check out jobs in the cities above or check out our full list of Best Cities for Jobs in 2017 ! * Methodology: Glassdoor’s Best Cities for Jobs report identifies U.S. metros with the highest overall Glassdoor City Score, based on a comparison of the 50 most populated U.S. metros. Each region’s Glassdoor City Score, based on a 5-point scale (5.0=best city for a job, 1.0=worst city for a job), is determined by weighing three factors equally: hiring opportunity, cost of living and job satisfaction.

5 Ways to Develop Your Workplace Collaboration Skills

5 Ways to Develop Your Workplace Collaboration Skills 5 Ways to Develop Your Workplace Collaboration Skills Back in high school or college, were you the one who always did the bulk of work on a group project, then wondered why the teacher wouldn’t just let you do it by yourself in the first place? Your teachers didn’t make you participate in groups to frustrate you. They aimed to teach you a critical skill: the ability to collaborate. Those people skills can be invaluable at the office where workplace collaboration is an increasingly pivotal part of the job for many creative professionals. Workplace collaboration is multifaceted and includes a range of abilities, such as clear communication, problem solving, empathy and accountability. Collaboration is an important soft skill for any creative professional. Projects involving design, marketing and user experience, for example, often require working together in teams and across departments. Interdepartmental initiatives can have their own challenges because teams may have different priorities, skill sets and personalities. In a survey by The Creative Group of more than 400 advertising and marketing executives, 37 percent of respondents said conflicting goals and priorities were the biggest barriers to cross-departmental collaboration.   The following five tips can help you develop your workplace collaboration skills: 1. Work on projects outside your comfort zone Taking on projects that fall outside your area of specialization forces you to rely on the expertise of others. For example, if you mainly focus on web design and have an opportunity to help implement a new project management system, use the opportunity to offer your creative expertise while also learning from colleagues in other departments, such as media services, IT and training. 2. Communicate clearly   It’s important to be clear and timely in your responses when you’re working with anyone, but especially when you’re collaborating with other departments. They may not know the buzzwords or acronyms you and your teammates use. When we asked creative professionals what online business communication behavior annoys them most, the top response was failure or slowness to respond, followed by poor grammar and spelling and use of acronyms and buzzwords. (Check out the infographic below for the full survey results.) We can help you get your next creative job: SUBMIT RESUME 3. Find a mentor Some organizations offer formal mentorship programs. Even if yours doesn’t, you can ask a colleague with strong collaboration skills to mentor you. A mentorship relationship doesn’t have to require a big time commitment. It could be as simple as eating lunch together once or twice a month.   Another option is to enroll in a class at a local college or attend seminars that focus on boosting collaboration and teamwork skills. Many courses and webinars are available online as well. 4. Join industry groups Industry associations are excellent resources for the professional development of both hard and soft skills. For instance, volunteering on a committee can be a good way to expand your network while honing your collaboration skills outside of the office. 5. Participate in team-building activities Sure, spending 15 minutes trying to untangle a human knot might seem silly, but time spent working with a group toward the same goal helps strengthen collaboration abilities. If your organization doesn’t offer team-building activities during retreats or meetings, you might suggest the idea to your supervisor. These activities can improve office communication by boosting morale and connection between colleagues. Wait, there’s more! There are some other things that will help you boost your workplace collaboration skills. For example, recognize when coworkers have expertise in certain areas and ask for their input. Likewise, use your know-how to help others, even when there doesn’t seem to be a direct benefit to you. In addition, when you work with a team, put the needs of the group ahead of your own. When you collaborate on interdepartmental projects, be especially attuned to differing perspectives and knowledge bases. For example, if you sit in the marketing department of a nonprofit, you’ll likely need to coordinate with the development department regarding grants and fundraising campaigns. Finally, share your ideas, but also listen to the input of others. Recognize when someone else has a stronger idea than your own and support it, being sure to give credit where credit is due. Your efforts will go a long way toward building strong workplace collaboration. Potential Causes of Afternoon Tiredness

Potential Causes of Afternoon Tiredness Potential Causes of Afternoon Tiredness Anyone who is overworked or not getting enough sleep at night can feel tired towards the end of the day. Add the daily stresses of family, kids, commuting, and work and it is not surprising that some days we just feel exhausted and ready for bed long before it is time. In mild cases of an  afternoon slump, a good nights sleep and eating healthier foods can usually resolve the symptoms, but not all afternoon slump symptoms are so easily addressed. For a growing percentage of those who suffer from this, extreme fatigue could be a warning sign of a serious metabolic disorder. Severe symptoms include a profound and intense desire to sleep, muscle fatigue, sweating, the shakes, headaches, changes in vision, or any combination of these symptoms. These symptoms are not signs of normal sluggishness but are often signs of pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or insulin resistance. Sitting Disease As more employees have become sedentary, the number of desk workers who develop Sitting Disease is on the rise. Sitting disease is a disorder that puts workers at an increased risk of pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and for cardiovascular problems. Experts reported that even people who sit for extended periods but regularly hit the gym are at risk. Exercise in itself, though obviously critical to our bodies overall, doesnt seem to counter the damaging effects of all this time spent seated. There are many reasons people develop a sluggish feeling in the afternoon (and for some, the afternoon slump occurs in mid-morning). When symptoms worsen or become severe enough that they decrease your ability to complete tasks, you may want to seek advice from a physician to rule out certain health problems. Pre-Diabetes Pre-diabetes is a condition in ?which your body begins to suffer from changes in how it metabolizes carbohydrates. There are few early warning signs, so it is best to see a doctor if you are having severe afternoon slump symptoms or have other risk factors associated with pre-diabetes. Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome (formerly called Syndrome X) are similar to pre-diabetes in that they are metabolic disorders that affect how the body metabolizes carbohydrates. Pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome can all be early warnings signs of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed when blood sugar levels are no longer in a normal or pre-diabetic range. Insulin Resistance Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas. It acts as a key to open cells in the body and blood cells to allow energy (glucose) to enter in. Without insulin, a person would die because the energy from the  food they eat would not be able to be used by the body. When blood sugar builds up in the bloodstream, it can damage all organs and tissues in the body and brain and cause coma and death if not treated. If you have insulin resistance, your body may need to overproduce insulin to keep your blood sugars within a normal range, or, it may not make enough insulin to keep your blood sugars in balance. It is called insulin resistance because your body resists the normal action of insulin. Overproduction of insulin can cause fluctuations in blood sugar, weight gain, moodiness, changes in your menstrual cycle (for women), excess facial hair (women), skin tags, changes in skin color (dark, velvety patches called acanthosis nigricans), and periods of profound fatigue. Insulin resistance is more common in people who also have severe allergies, thyroid disorders (especially Hashimotos Thyroiditis), women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome and can be caused by certain types of medications.

The Chronicles of How Far Should a Resume Go Back

The Chronicles of How Far Should a Resume Go Back How Far Should a Resume Go Back: No Longer a Mystery Long gone are the times of generic resumes to fit all submissions. If you held a job for just a couple of months, it may be better merely to list everything in conditions of years, and not include months. For instance, If you've been working for 15 decades, you might want to include only about ten decades of experience. For instance, if you are working for 20 decades but changed careers five decades before, you might only should show the last five years. A very simple address using your name at a recognized and mainstream service like gmail is the best way to go for an expert contact. List different positions you've held, but include somewhat more information about each role to demonstrate the variety of your expertise and skill collection. Resume writing can be unbelievably challenging. If you've got an extensive work history, it is going to be more complicated to symbol ize your experience in an easily digestible form. For you not to get rid of an opportunity to find a job offer from a reliable company, it would be a wonderful remedy to use the assistance of a qualified writing agency. In the majority of instances, a standard hiring manager is faced with numerous stacks of applications, and he or she has only a little quantity of time to acquire through them. When you're looking for a new job, the normal procedure for filling out an on-line application or dropping off a resume isn't always enough. If you're at an entire loss, look at going to a reputable resume preparation support. In some instances you could have a gap of a month or two or more between leaving a job and receiving a new job. The very best center of your resume is the most essential portion of the entire document because it's the very first thing the hiring agent or someone else will observe when they look at it. The advice for LinkedIn is, needless to say, the specific opp osite. The Fight Against How Far Should a Resume Go Back Look over the information and determine whether it's pertinent to the work opening and whether the hiring manager is going to be impressed with that. By carefully targeting resumes for certain jobs and situations, it's possible to greatly enhance your odds of getting noticed in the work industry. To discover what you should include, return to the work description. You ought not submit generic resumes they ought to be unique for each business and even potentially for each job. In terms of earlier jobs, most job seekers wish to return as far as possible since they need to impress hiring managers. In the current competitive job market, it's imperative that you help employers see the advantages of hiring you over somebody else. You might have heard that employers compare resumes and LinkedIn profiles, and you're probably wondering why and what they want to get. Likewise, if you're likely to apply to get a job which requires over 20 decades of experience, add the amount of experience with the relevancy to the work experience needed. It can be difficult to streamline an individual's full career into a page or two, particularly if they have decades of work experience. Obviously, it's important that you list relevant work experience on your resume. You might want to leave off work experience in different fields unless it is possible to allow it to be relevant to the job which you are applying for. What the In-Crowd Won't Tell You About How Far Should a R esume Go Back Resume objectives can be a little controversial. Your Summary is going to be short. You will also have information on your latest employment history, your activities, and your individual interests, but the focus of the CV ought to be academic information pertinent to the program to which you're applying. Should you need a resume that looks like it reads, look no more. Perhaps you've worked as a shop assistant. Your resume can continue to be riveting. If your resume is not proofread, your very first impression might not be the one that you need to last. So in that instance, it is wise to go beyond a page only in the event that you hold a valuable content. If you're able to do that in 1 page, definitely do. You need to be able to say all that in one page. Your aim ought to be to keep the resume concentrated on the work target and downplay irrelevant info, states Isaacs. Your purpose is to find the interview. The aim of your resume is to highlight your bes t accomplishments and abilities, instead of hurling every bit of information about you at an employer. The main aim of your resume ought to be to impress the reader with the particular qualifications and experiences that cause you to fit to get hired for a desired position.
